our philosophy
I started Urbanknit™ in 2006 with the aim of providing unique and colourful handmade fashion accessories that give you a sense of individuality.
I love to design and make pieces that are unique and unusual in bold prints, bright colours and interesting textures.
For that reason I particularly love using traditional African prints and fabrics and combining them with fabrics like denim, corduroy, and cotton to make accessories that are durable yet interesting thus mixing colours and cultures where the old tradition meets the modern world.
our products
Our fashion pieces come in bright African prints and batiks. We have a lovely collection of Aso-Òkè, Ànkárá and Àdìre fabrics from Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia and generally West Africa, some of which are themselves handmade. To learn a little more about the fabrics, look at the brief definitions on materiality.
Our handknitted scarves are made in natural yarns such as merino wool and alpaca for the extra luxurious feel against the skin. Our scarves, made in our signature chunky knit style, will keep you warm and cosy.
what does urbanknit mean?
Urbanknit is not just about our products but about what inspires them. It is about ideas, experimentation, exploration of concepts in creativity and design, collaborations and a lot more. Urbanknit is where various concepts meet.
Urbanknit is also about the Afropolitan life; experiencing different cities of the world, observing urban life, modern art; curated or created, documenting interesting finds, junctions, overlaps and contrasts. We explore a lot of these ideas on our blog. Join us on our journeys!
